Homeopathy
is a system of natural healing that is based on the principle 'like
cures like'. While the observation of this principle dates back
to Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.), it was developed and established
in the eighteenth century by German physician Samual Hahneman. Homeopathic
medicine is recognized by the World Health Organization as the second
largest therapeutic system in the world. The practice of homeopathy
has deep respect for the fact that every person is unique and expresses
imbalance in different ways. Homeopathic remedies are derived from
a wide variety of natural substances and can be used to stimulate
the body's innate healing ability to resolve imbalances and restore
health.
In
medicine, there are two basic ways to treat ill health: 1) the way
of opposites; and 2) the way of similars.Consider a patient with
a cough: The way of opposites involves using anti-cough drugs that
suppress and prevent the cough, while the way of similars acknowledges
that the body is expressing this cough for a reason and reminds
the body of what is needed for healing while gently supporting the
individual through it.
In
homeopathy, it is your uniqueness that is most important - there
is no 'homeopathic cough remedy'. Of a hundred people with a cough,
it is possible that no two people will receive the same remedy.
Naturopathic doctors are trained to take a thorough case and history
that will help them to identify the right remedy for you, exemplifying
the principles of individualized medicine.
