Naturopathic medicine is the art and science of healing based on an underlying principle that the body has the innate ability to heal itself. We often think of nature as being that which we are surrounded by when we go for a walk in the forest, sit near a river or look up at the sky - and it is, but we forget that we too are a part of nature. Understanding this we see that when we talk about the healing power and support of nature we're not only talking about the properties of different plants, herbs or environments, but also the capacity we each have within our own selves to create healing and balance.

Focusing on prevention and patient education, a naturopathic doctor works with individuals to identify and treat the underlying causes of illness. It is not about treating conditions or disease, rather it is about working with a whole person - body, mind and spirit - to identify the root cause and find a way to restore a place of balanced wellness.

Naturopathic medicine encompasses a wide range of therapeutic systems, including clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, Traditional Chinese medicine, homeopathy, environmental and physical medicine. The treatments selected are different for each person, always chosen for their unique situation.

What to expect

As your naturopathic doctor, it is my priority to listen to you and work to understand your specific needs and challenges. I will devote time, research and compassion into your care because I realize that a thorough understanding of your personal health and history is essential to creating a treatment plan that is individualized to you. I do not treat diseases or illnesses, I treat people. We are all more than the sum of our parts, more than the labels of any illness or condition, we are complex and unique beings and I will treat each of my patients with this knowing. I am here to support you, to teach and encourage you towards a place of empowerment, to help you achieve your personal health goals and maintain a state of balance and wellness.
As a patient of the Mahalo Naturopathic Centre, you will experience treatments that are consistent with the philosophy and principles of naturopathic medicine. These treatments will be specific to you and will work to strengthen and stimulate the ability you have within you to heal, to attain a state of optimal health and to prevent health problems from occurring in the future.

First Visit: 90 minutes

A first visit consists of an in-depth review of your health concerns and goals as well as a thorough naturopathic assessment. You can bring in any laboratory test results if they have been performed within the past year.

After your first appointment, you will receive a detailed health questionnaire, diet diary and other health assessment tools that will help us to identify key details of your life and health history. These tools are important for both of us, as they will enable us to understand many of the different factors that are affecting your total health and will help us evaluate things as they begin to improve.

Second Visit: 60 minutes

In your second visit the focus is on developing a more comprehensive understanding of your diet and lifestyle, this will involve a non-invasive general physical examination to assess your health and look for nutritional deficiencies. It may also involve Chinese tongue and pulse diagnosis, urinalysis and recommendations for further testing. During this visit we will discuss options for naturopathic care that are specific to you and together we will decide which options are best for you.

Your treatments may involve one or more of several modalities available to naturopathic doctors and generally consist of a combination of dietary & lifestyle recommendations, herbal and homeopathic preparations, professional grade natural supplements & nutrients, as well as physical medicine, acupuncture, counseling and health education.

Follow Up Visits: 30 - 60 minutes (depending on your specific case)

Follow up visits are important so that we can monitor your progress, refine and expand your plan of care and support you as you move towards a place of optimal health. The number and frequency of your follow up visits will be unique to you, depending on the type of therapy we choose and specific needs you have.
